New Albion Orientation “Boot Camp”
The character of a consistent, mature student never comes about by accident, but it must be cultivated. It usually takes many years for this solid character of the learner to develop, but we at New Albion thought it helpful to start the academic year off with a two-week “Boot Camp” of sorts, that would point out, through very memorable and sometimes difficult ways, the qualities of a good student. The boot camp was to set the tone for the year’s academic camaraderie, and serve up many examples later, to the common recollection of everyone.
What abilities are foundational to being a good student overall, no matter where the student is or what the student is learning? This is what we asked ourselves. These are what we came up with:
Observation
Focus and Self-Control
Precision
Memory and Correlation
Organization & Orderliness

We learn, not for school, but for life.
